The Anthropocene: Our Conservation Paradigm for the Future?
The Anthropocene is this emerging era of Earth’s history wherein human activities are becoming a dominant, disturbing and destabilizing force upon the entire Earth system. It is bringing substantial changes to Alaska’s landscapes, resources, and lifeways. While the Anthropocene is a scientific term describing the totality of human-Earth interactions, it is also an approach to stewardship. It challenges us to re-think long-standing notions of nature, our role in the biosphere, and our current conservation paradigm. This presentation summarizes the environmental, scientific, social, and ethical dimensions of the Anthropocene.
