The Mountainfilm Festival, held each year over Memorial Day Weekend, has been inspiring audiences to create a better world since 1979. Alaska Wildlife Alliance was honored to attend the 2024 Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, Colorado, as a subject of the film ‘A Good Wolf’, which was featured in the festival’s lineup of documentaries.
‘A Good Wolf’ is a feature-length documentary film by independent filmmaker Ramey Newell. The film follows three groups of Alaskans as they navigate a 40-year conflict over a single tract of land adjacent to Denali National Park, and the wolves that are hunted and trapped there. The struggle is volatile, with numerous parties involved, including state and federal authorities, fur trappers and wildlife advocates.
In the film, biologists and activists, armed with thorough data, bring a new proposal to state authorities, hoping to regain protections for wolves near the park boundary. However, local trappers are adamantly opposed. ‘A Good Wolf’ follows the controversy for three years, examining the difficulties of balancing competing human interests on public lands. Hanging in the balance are some of America’s most iconic animals and wild places.
‘A Good Wolf’ was shown on the big screen, and AWA was invited to table at the Telluride Patagonia store. Anyone who donated to AWA at the tabling event was entered to win a duffel bag donated by Patagonia!
We’re working to organize Alaska screenings later this year and in 2025. If you’d like a screening in your community, please contact us!
